Fire Extinguisher Buying Guide

Understand fire classes, extinguisher media, placement, inspection and the questions to answer before requesting a quote.

Scope: This guide supports purchasing conversations. It does not replace a workplace risk assessment, manufacturer instructions, competent training or advice on legal compliance.

1. Assess the fire risks

Identify combustible materials, ignition sources, occupancy, escape routes and special hazards. Fire extinguishers are one element of a broader fire-safety plan that also includes prevention, detection, alarms, evacuation and trained response.

2. Match the medium to the hazard

Extinguishing media are designed for different types of fire, and using the wrong medium may be ineffective or dangerous. Obtain a site-specific recommendation based on the likely fuels and electrical or special hazards present.

3. Plan quantity and placement

The required number, rating and travel distance depend on the premises and applicable requirements. Units should be conspicuous, accessible and protected from damage without obstructing escape routes.

4. Confirm identification and instructions

Before ordering, confirm the product model, capacity, media, operating instructions and available documentation. Avoid purchasing solely on cylinder color or price.

5. Arrange inspection and maintenance

Extinguishers need routine visual checks and competent servicing at the intervals required for the product and workplace. Record inspections and address missing seals, damage, discharge, corrosion or pressure concerns promptly.
